My name is Thun Nadi, and I am a student from Myanmar. I came to the UK to study A levels at Abbey College Cambridge, and this was my first experience studying abroad- in fact, my first time ever leaving home. At the beginning, this was a very daunting experience for me.
During this important stage of my education, I was a day student living with a host family in Cambridge and under the guardianship of Heather from Cambridge Guardians for nearly two years. I am deeply grateful for the support and guidance I received throughout this time.
Being far from home as an international student meant learning how to balance independence with the need for care and guidance. Heather acted as my guardian throughout my studies, making sure I felt well supported and settled, while always respecting my independence as a student.
“Being far from home as an international student meant balancing independence with the need for care and guidance.”
Settling into Life in the UK
When I first arrived in the UK, I felt nervous and unsure about how I would adapt to a new culture and a new academic system. Heather made this transition much easier for me. She guided me through settling in during my first weeks in Cambridge and helped me feel more confident about day-to-day life.
She also advised me on choosing my A level subjects, which was extremely helpful at such an important stage of my education.
Academic Guidance and Ongoing Support
There is no doubt that Heather is an expert in education. She holds an education degree and has previous experience as a biology teacher, so she understands how students feel about certain subjects and the challenges international students face when studying in the UK.
Our communication was always clear and supportive. Whenever I experienced difficulties at school, Heather was approachable, patient, and ready with helpful advice. Knowing I could reach out when needed made a real difference to my experience.
Progression and Next Steps
Throughout my A level studies, I felt encouraged and supported as I worked towards my goals. As I begin the next chapter of my education at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where I will study Economics, I am very grateful for the guidance I received during my time in Cambridge.
“Heather’s guidance helped me feel confident and supported as I worked towards my goals.”
Reflection
I feel very fortunate to have had Heather as my guardian. She was more than just a guardian, she was a mentor, a guide, and a steady source of encouragement throughout my A level studies.
I am truly grateful for her professionalism, reliability, and care. Being under the guardianship of Cambridge Guardians made me feel supported and understood, even while being far from home.
